The fourth Sunday in July is Parents’ Day in the United States, created by an act of Congress in 1994. While it may receive less attention than the well-known Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, Parents’ Day reflects on the more general role of being a parent and raising children. While not all families are the same, households with children typically have at least one parent responsible for nurturing and caring for the next generation. There are many versions of Parents’ Day around the world. In South Korea, the tradition is for children to offer carnations as a gift of appreciation to their parents. In other cultures, it’s simply a reminder to stop and thank our parents for their love and all they have done for us. I wish you a Happy Parents’ Day. |
